Department of Comprehensive Dentistry

The Department of Comprehensive Dentistry supports educational, translational, behavioral, and biomaterials research. Supported are the development of teaching resources through innovative technology and evidence-based instructional techniques to enhance self-directed student learning and improvement in student learning outcomes. The division of behavior sciences provides research to improve faculty/staff/student burnout and provider/patient communication. The division of biomaterials provides translational research to enhance provider evidence-based decision making in selecting dental biomaterials while supporting patient-centered care.  The department supports the overall University of Louisville School of Dentistry research mission through the lens of our student teaching objectives while collaborating with our basics sciences and craniofacial research initiatives.

Department of Diagnosis & Oral Health

The Department of Diagnosis & Oral Health conducts independent clinical research in each discipline including Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. Faculty members support the overall ULSD research mission by sponsoring DMD and graduate students by collaborating with other clinical and basic science faculty initiatives primarily in the areas of imaging and retrospective clinical data analysis.

Department of Oral Immunology & Infectious Diseases

OIID conducts basic research in the areas of the oral microbiome, host-pathogen interactions, microbial biofilms and the innate immune response to infection. The impact of these processes on systemic health and disease is also a major research direction. The department houses the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Functional Microbiomics, Inflammation, and Pathogenicity - a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to finding new ways to fight potentially devastating diseases while creating the next generation of innovation leaders.

Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery conducts independent clinical research in our discipline. Faculty members support the overall ULSD research mission by sponsoring OMS residents in advancing clinical care in our specialty. Faculty and residents collaborate to cover a wide variety of clinical topics primarily related to maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction.

Department of Rehabilitative & Reconstructive Dentistry

The Department of Rehabilitative & Reconstructive Dentistry conducts independent clinical research to support the Orthodontic and Prosthodontic programs. Faculty members support the overall ULSD research mission by sponsoring DMD and graduate students in collaboration with other clinical, basic science and engineering faculty initiatives. Research initiatives include the areas of bone biology, tooth movement, digital technologies and emerging materials with antimicrobial characteristics, 3D printing and milling.
